Nothing has changed in this world. Look at what is happening in Bosnia, Afhanistan, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Palestine, India etc... It does not matter which race or relegion you belong to it is the same story every time. Powerful rule the land. Sad but true.
I believe most people are RATS in a Maze Happy to just look for the CHEESE! I say that because the old saying goes "history repeats itself" how sick! I just wonder when Mother Nature will get sick of all the free radicals that destroy her?
And for Religion that's a real SICK subject. Just nuture the soul and be good to each other with respect! WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!
BESIOUX
Mother Earth love us-she is much turtle backed bigger than our progeny. She hears our confluent drum beats and bears us, though we rape her. It is the ghost dance time.
Take up your rattles and drums,

We cannot change the past and what was done. We can only change how we react to the present and do better. Preserving history with these photos is a very noble endeavor.
i wish they could have said where they where taken ..i live in nevada close to the sierras(doner pass) i would have loved if it actually said where they where ... guess i will just haved to look it up ... i love how everything was so untouched and beautifull
Great photos! 3 of the pictures seem to have been taken of the same town but from different perspectives (The ones with the very large hotel/saloon?). I wonder if they were taken by the same photographer or just coincidence. Anyone know what town it was?
Yes, religion, politics, bigotry and greed can lead people to do cruel and ridiculous things.
These are awesome pictures though. They give faces to all the books I've read.
I think that what is most interesting is that these old photos, faded to brown and yellow, have survived in someone's attic for over 100 years.
How will today's modern digital photos stored on CDs and hard drives survive 100 years?
I suggest that they will not.
Just because a democide happened because of your ancestors, doesn't make it ok or make it ok to go 'fuck them'. The English and their descendants (and other European nations in other parts) destroyed entire nations and cultures apart from hundreds of thousands of people. This is not ok, no matter when it happened, by who or what the destroyed culture where doing before they were destroyed culture where doing before they were destroyed.
Have you ever heard of the comment, "do as I do and follow what I do"? Apparently not, since reading your sub 'mission' articulates a blindness to your own religious, ideological theorems. This was done in your culture, own up to it, because what one does has a history attached to it and therefore they will repeat the procedures to annihilate any races of people since they are not "productive".
Unfortunately this seems to be the nature of the beast. The conquering of foreign peoples in search of new territory is not new. It has been going on longer than recorded human history, by many cultures, against many cultures. We can either hate the human race or change it one person at a time starting with ourselves.
I was truly fascinated by the pictures. A wonderful peek into the past!
I wonder what Jesus would say about America. Would he tell the Native Americans to turn the other cheek? Would it have worked? When is war in self-defense justified?
According to The Holy Bible, He who believeth in me shall not die but have ever lasting life. And those who do not shall burn for enternity along with the earth. I guess the Indians didnt believe in Jesus.
You turn my stomach with your arrogant attitude. How dare you suggest Jesus would have approved of what happened to an entire race of people. It's people like you give christianity a bad name.
The fact that so many people believe in the bible verbatim, in spite of all of it's contradictions and it's story lines that were borrowed from other ancient religions in order to make it more palatable to converts, and who still believe it is handed down to humans, from an all powerful god who sees, knows and can do all(but can only save you from the fires of Hell if you believe in him), as a guide to a useful and happy life, boggles the intelligent mind.
so sad to say, but there is very little as powerful as ignorance.
sometimes truth conquers, and in the long run, i must believe it eventually wins out. but it seems to require a really, really long run....
it is 2009, and a significant fraction of Americans still believe Iraq had something to do with causing 9/11. a substantial fraction of our people don't 'believe in' evolution--which is like not 'believing in' gravity--it is there, all around you, so obvious in everything we call biology, what in the world can it mean not to believe in it?
and so on.
as i say, i keep going because i believe truth and love eventually conquer, but boy can it ever take a long, long time. (and much work)
Sweet !...back when white Christian racism went unquestioned and I could rise to the top on the backs of the disenfranchised.
Today in this ungrateful nation I have to get a law degree to achieve what I could back then with just a gun and a rope. Theft & extortion just isn't what it use to be. This is what happens when people quit believing in God...He turns on ya.
Where the "coolies"?
I like these pictures. I have seen some before.I like them not for what they represent in history but rather for the people and places they display. Each one to me has meaning. The character of the land, untamed and natural. The people whose character can be plainly seen.
I can read all the history books in the world but there is nothing like visual images to really bring home the realism of what it must have been like to have actually lived history. Disturbing and powerful images. Look at the faces of these pround spiritual and powerful native americans. God forgive us white men.
I agree. A time whereeveryone had a role for their survival. Where u didnt have things pre packed, pre cooked or standards approved. U survived depending on what u grew, made or could do. Where values & strengths where more than just ideals. Sad us whiteys were so ignorant of what the indigenous folk could have offered us instead of raping the land for a quick buck. Nothing has changed. We just find other things to rape & pillidge. We have lost that quiet wisdom & humility for each other & have lost respect for mother earth. Beautiful & touching are those photos to me. It was very hard for the settlers, just look at the faces of the children.
Yes, the various tribes of North America were a noble race who had reverence for nature and understood their place within it. It's a shame that so many derive more joy from a sterile, concrete suburbia instead of that which came before us. Once it's gone I don't think we'll be seeing anything like it anytime soon.
You fail to understand, if you were asleep, the fucking Indian would kill you, fuck your wife and children. Steal your horse and eat your dog. WHAT IS SO NOBLE about that?
you're saying that they imitated the way we treated them?
well, maybe not so thoroughly though. look at who did most of the dying (and of course, most of the fucking of someone else's wife and so on).
If you are suggesting that all indigenous Americans would have behaved that way you might want to check your facts. Or you might want to remain ignorant.
Nice pics. To those few crybabies that so lament the white man taking over a land of ignorant, violent people and bringing into the world the highest standard of living in history, bite me. I am as civilized as I can be. When you try to savage me though, you'll find what a barbaric savage a white American can be. People with superior arms, tactics, and means have dominated the less superior on every continent throughout history. It is our nature. So you cry, I'll shoot.
These photographs are available for research via the Library of Congress. They record the historicity of what happened in the late 1800's to a great indigenous nation when it collided with the technology of the white-eye. The camera. Look up Grabill. He took most of them.
As for the anger that has been expressed here-it is better to be angry than depressed. But look to the people who still are able to blow the breath of love thru the Lakotan flute. They are red, white, many colors. If we all examine our lives thru the lens of judgement, not a one of us will come out treaty clean.
There was a mighty meeting of Lakotan flute players in Eau Claire WI this summer. The tribes forgave. Now will you?
What a powerful collection to evoke such simmering emotions. A picture is worth a thousand words-without a single reference. The response you have, is mostly evocative of the experience of looking in the mirror.
Look hard-be brave. Love lingers-always.
These are some really beautiful photos, to be appreciated, but when i started reading all the comments it changed my mood, why cant people just keep their racist comments to themselves and stop spreading garbage around the world.
People are too focused on all our differences, it's going to be the end of us.
Not fake, several of the photos I've seen before in books on the history of the Black Hills. I identified Deadwood, Custer and Lead. I've seen the first picture of the stage coach caravan before but would have to look for it to say in what publication. Wonderful presentation. Thanks.
The native or aboriginal people of North America were
ripe for deception and conquest. Much like other groups of people(today)...they did't blend into our idea of society real well. We are the melting pot - true, but some people don't melt so good. So we snuffed them...thats the way we did things back then....it's just history, nothing to be ashamed of. I refuse to be held accountable for the actions of my ancestors.
